Math Acceleration Procedures
Why Math Acceleration?
While the needs of many gifted math students are met through differentiation provided in the math class and in GATE Math, there are some students for whom additional service is required in order to ensure the opportunity for a year's worth of growth. Therefore, the district has developed procedures for determining when acceleration (skipping a grade) in math is appropriate for students.

Acceleration Process
Screening
  • Students in grades 2-5 who meet gifted identification criteria in math, or who are referred for testing, meet screening criteria to participate in further assessment for possible math acceleration.
Assessment
  • Each spring, students in the acceleration test group take a curriculum-based assessment representing the skills and content one year above their current math placement.
Acceleration Criteria
  • In order to qualify for acceleration, students must demonstrate at least 75% mastery on the above-grade math assessment.
Notification
  • Early in the summer, the district notifies parents of whether the student scored in the expected range or qualifies for a math acceleration placement to begin the following fall. Please note that the actual percent score is not reported to parents.
Placement
  • Students who meet criteria for math acceleration are placed into a math class at another grade level (with parent permission). Depending on factors such as class size, they may be placed in a regular class for math, or may participate in a separate section comprised only of accelerated math students.
Annual Re-Screening
  • Students may be referred for re-testing each spring through the end of 5th grade math.
  • Students identified as gifted in math are automatically included in the spring testing group.
  • Students who are already accelerated in math also participate in testing. In rare instances, some students may need to accelerate a second time.
