Math Acceleration Procedures
Why Math Acceleration?
While the needs of many gifted math students are met through differentiation provided in the math class and in GATE Math, there are some students for whom additional service is required in order to ensure the opportunity for a year's worth of growth. Therefore, the district has developed procedures for determining when acceleration (skipping a grade) in math is appropriate for students.

About the Test
- The acceleration test is comprised of 30-40 questions, providing a balanced representation of the skills and concepts from the full year's worth of curriculum that the student would potentially be skipping. Many questions include multiple sections/answers that help break complex operations into more specific skills. The assessment is untimed, but most students are able to complete it in about an hour. Students are provided with scrap paper and any additional materials needed for the level of test they are taking (i.e. ruler, geometry template); however, they may not use other help or resources.
Other Information
- For test security and validity purposes, test questions are not released to parents, and students may not take the same assessment more than once.
- Since these procedures are meant to identify those students who already demonstrate a need for acceleration, the district does not provide any materials to help students prepare/study for the acceleration assessment.
